Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Body very compressed laterally. Sturdy head with relatively large eyes. Wide mouth, with slight prognathism of the lower jaw. The first dorsal fin begins slightly behind the vertical that passes through the base of the pectorals. The second dorsal fin links with anal fin; relatively short pectoral fins, small pelvic fin in thoracic position. Intense blue color on the back, flanks and belly lighter. Maximum observed size of 117 cm.
