Large fish, measuring up to 1.2 m in length and reaching 200 kg in weight, although there are rare specimens up to 3 m and 320 kg. It has a very robust morphology. It has an oval, elongated and fleshy body. It has large jaws whose posterior border exceeds half of the eye. The lower jaw is prominent and is armed with strong teeth. The lateral line is strongly arched above the pectoralis. Its coloration varies from olive to black. The lower area is white.
